Do some sports collectors overreact when an auction company goofs?
Competition is high when a dozen or so larger sports memorabilia auction companies battle over consignments and sales. In the current economy it's even more of a dog-eat-dog situation in the sports collecting world.
Some are fortunate enough to produce catalogs that would make AT&T jealous. They're full of cool stuff. Old, undiscovered sports artifacts, the highest-graded baseball card sets in existence and rare autographs just to name a few.
But not everything is always as advertised. Sometimes collectors who find an item that's not the genuine article make no secret of their discovery. Word spreads fast on the internet. Is it fair? PSA president Joe Orlando's latest column would seem to plant him firmly in the 'no' category. |
