Auction Bound? Final Yankee Stadium HR Ball

If he was planning to sell it, "Steve" wasn't letting on.

The baseball fan from Colorado who snared the Jose Molina home run ball has a piece of history.

"It would be something nice to give to your grandkids," said Steve, who wasn't giving his last name just yet.

Since it doesn't relate to a personal milestone that rolls off the tongue of fans everywhere, it's not likely the proceeds from any sale of the final circuit clout at Yankee Stadium would break records, but it would certainly be a major addition to any sports memorabilia auction house catalog.

Steve made the grab as the ball rolled around in the netting above the monuments in left field. Other fans were trying to stake their claim, realizing it might be the last homer.

Paul Russo, another fan from Manhattan, said he was the one who latched onto the ball, but Stadiuim security officers didn't agree.

"When it was first hit, you could just kind of see it come right at us and you knew it was coming close," Russo told reporters. "I mean I was right under it, it hit bounced once and came right back to me and I just grabbed it," he said, claiming he held a grip on the ball through the netting. "Yeah I held it. I wasn't going to let go of it."

He said he was confident he is the ball's rightful owner.

"I had it. All the Yankees officials were there. I caught it, it came right to me."

Meanwhile, the home run that Derek Jeter hit last week to tie Lou Gehrig for most hits at Yankee Stadium is back in the shortstop's hands.

LoHud.com reports that a lifelong Mets fan turned it over in exchange for game tickets, an autographed bat and a brief meeting with Jeter.
