1914 Crackerjack Christy Mathewson"Auction season" continued with Mastro's Classic Collector sale. A near set of 1952 Topps, a 1914 Crackerjack Christy Mathewson and a barrel full of 2005 White Sox autographed baseballs were high on the list.

Total take? $2.1 million.

Mastro Auctions rolled out over 1700 lots of sports and Americana for its October Classic Collector sale, closing over two nights. The auction realized $2.1 million in bids.

Vintage baseball cards and rare football cards were among the items in the sale.

The highest realized price was for a near set of 398 1952 Topps baseball cards, which drew a final bid of $18,079. The 20% Mastro buyer's premium pushed the final total to $21,695. 60 of the cards were graded by PSA, including the Mantle which was labeled a 2 (good). The set drew 32 bids.

A 1914 Crackerjack Christy Mathewson graded SGC 40 drew 44 bids sold for $19,678 including the buyer's premium. Vintage hockey card collectors focused on a 1911/12 C55 complete set which brought $16,187. A 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams sold for $11,651 in PSA 6 grade while a complete mid-grade Wilson set (20 cards) was purchased for $13,315. A 1952 Topps Mantle, graded PSA 4, brought $12,680.

One of the more unique lots in the sale was a hoard of 72 2005 Chicago White Sox autographed baseballs. 26 signatures from that year's World Series champs adorned each ball and the lot sold for $15,415 ($214 per ball).

“Another two million dollar plus Classic Collector event puts an exclamation point on the success of these great hobby sales,” said Doug Allen, president of Mastro Auctions. “We look forward to another series of these events in 2008 as they continue to grow and attract more collectors and add favorably to the overall scope and depth of the collecting industry.”
