Two trading card and memorabilia companies have decided to part ways with Michael Vick. Upper Deck has pulled all items from its on-line store and won't produce any new Vick football cards this fall. Donruss is also pulling Vick products from its line.
Calling the federal dogfighting charges "very upsetting", Upper Deck company has removed Michael Vick from its upcoming trading card products and taken all autographed Vick memorabilia off its website.
The company stated it had been working with the NFL regarding a decision on Vick and came to the conclusion to eliminate Vick cards beginning with its Ultimate Collection Football set scheduled for release in October. Upper Deck has already released some football card products for the upcoming season but did not indicate those cards would be pulled from production. Upper Deck also owns the Fleer trading card name and releases products under that label as well.
On Friday, Donruss also decided to remove Vick products from future releases starting with its October issues.
Vick had a contract to sign football memorabilia for Upper Deck Authenticated and featured autographed items of the Falcons' quarterback in the company’s internet store but has decided to pull those items while Vick fights the felony charge. Vick authenticated memorabilia has been taken down from the UDA site including autographed footballs, helmets, jerseys and the company’s line of “Breaking Through” pieces.
“Of course we appreciate the fact that Mr. Vick is innocent until proven guilty, but the allegations alone have resulted in an outpouring of very strong emotion within our organization and among the collecting community,” Kerri Stockholm, Director of Marketing for Upper Deck said in a statement released late Friday.
“We believe collectors will agree and support this decision as being the best course of action for our football business.”
Reebok and Nike also dropped Vick-endorsed products Friday.
