Some vintage baseball and football card sets, painstakingly put together to rank among the highest graded sets known, brought plenty of interest in an auction conducted by Michigan-based Greg Bussineau.
A 1933 Goudey baseball set, ranked 13th on the PSA Set Registry, attained the top price, selling for $58,200. All 239 cards in the set, which included seven wrapper variations and two patent cards, were graded EX-MT 6 by PSA.
The third finest set of 1971 Topps baseball also pushed past the $50,000 barrier before bidding closed early Friday morning. The set, with an average grade of 8.33, sold for $53,040, some $11,000 more than the SMR value of the individual cards.
A 1975 Topps mini set, carrying a GPA of 9.04 (mint), sold for $39,000. It is listed as the second best '75 mini set on the Registry.
The all-time finest set of 1956 Topps football changed hands in the auction. The 120-card set carried an impressing 8.78 average and brought $28,320. The second best 1955 Bowman set, graded 8.48, sold for $21,840.
Tops among the individual cards sold was a 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle, graded PSA 8.5. It brought a final realized price of $20,640. The only 1971 Topps Tom Seaver ever to reach the PSA 10 (gem mint) grade, rocketed to $20,520, a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (PSA 6) sold for $19,440 and the winner of a 1915 Cracker Jack Nap Lajoie graded SGC 96, will pay $14,520.
