He apparently wasn’t a one-game wonder. On the day of Johnny Cueto’s second start, Topps has tabbed him as leadoff man for one of its more popular redemption programs.
Topps has announced the player redeemable for the 2008 Topps Finest Baseball Rookie Card Redemption # 1 is Cincinnati Reds’ pitcher Johnny Cueto.
Cueto rookie cards could be a hot commodity this year. The youngster created a major stir during the first week of the season, when he debuted by retiring 21 of 22 hitters he faced in seven innings, striking out 10 in a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tuesday night, Cueto was equally impressive against the Brewers, with a 96-mile-per-hour fastball and hard slider. He fanned eight in six and a-third innings but did not earn a decision.
Throughout the 2008 Major League Baseball season, Topps will announce the subjects for the 10-card Rookie Redemption set. Each Master Box of Topps Finest includes one Rookie Redemption. The cards will be printed and shipped to collectors after 8/30/08.
