Friends and associates are stepping up to help a St. Petersburg sports card shop owner who recently had both kidneys removed.
Orve Johansson and his wife opened The Baseball Card Shop in St. Petersburgh, Florida in 1982. After starting on a shoestring, they’ve endured plenty of market fluctuations, but managed to keep local collectors happy.
He’s been especially excited since the hometown Tampa Bay Rays blossomed into a contender last year.
Lately, though, things haven’t been so much fun.
Johansson, 63, had both kidneys removed in March and to help offset medical expenses, fellow collectors and an auction house have stepped up to the plate by helping keep the store open.
The latest effort is an online auction, aimed at raising money for mounting medical bills. “All I want to do is be in the store,” he told the St. Petersburg Times in a story published this week.
