Topps is using its first NFL card design for its latest eTopps project.
eTopps began offering a special series of cards this week, paying homage to the company’s first NFL release in 1956. The cards feature football icons past and present, presented in the same design of 53 seasons ago but utilizing the shiny eTopps technology.
The company began offering the cards online Monday afternoon and will continue offering additional cards in the weeks that follow. The collection will include all-time NFL greats including Barry Sanders, Roger Staubach, Tom Landry, Eric Dickerson and Tom Brady. Cards will be offered individually, encased and be sequentially numbered.
Topps launched its eTopps football program in 2000, issuing a limited number of cards each year. Most collectors who purchase the "initial public offerings" keep them in an online portfolio, buying and selling them through a special eBay portal.
The NFL did not renew its license with Topps and the company's plans for football cards in forthcoming seasons aren't yet known.
