Cypres Collection About to Go Public

{mosimage}LA-based collector Gary Cypres has built one of the world’s best sports memorabilia collections. The private museum he’s been running might soon be open to the public.

He’s among the highest of the high rollers who bid on the most expensive pieces you see in the sports memorabilia auction catalogs. For 20 years, Gary Cypres has been putting together a collection that includes some historic one-of-a-kind pieces, bidding against some big league executives for some of the nicer pieces.

His dream of letting the world in to see what he’s put together is slowly taking shape. By early spring, the Cypres Sports Museum should be open for public tours and could be a nice tourist attraction in its location just a mile south of the Staples Center.

Los Angeles Sports Council Chairman Alan Rothenberg says word will spread quickly among out-of-town fans. "Done right, it could become one of the ‘must’ stops for tourists," said Rothenberg who has toured the museum. "It’s only a question of how much he chooses to expose it. It could become an icon."

The LA Times has a story and photo tour of the amazing collection.
