One of the greatest sports movies ever made celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Bull Durham helped revitalize minor league baseball and its lines are still quoted by players at all levels and millions of fans each summer. Now, Bull Durham is coming to baseball cards. 2013 Topps Pro Debut Baseball, the fourth edition of the annual minor league set, will include cards featuring cut autographs from the stars of Bull Durham, including Kevin Costner, Susan and Tim Robbins. Redemption cards will be random inserts collectors can exchange for cards focused on the movie.
Pro Debut will debut in hobby shops on June 5 with two autographs, one patch card and one additional patch or relic card promised inside every box. Each pack will have eight cards in all and every box will contain 24 packs.
A 220-card base set done in the 2013 Topps style will feature minor league players who will be in the middle of their season when the product arrives. Fifteen of those cards will have a second version that will be randomly inserted and each card will also have a gold parallel of which there will be only 50 copies made. While no checklist was released, expect to see cards of Reds’ speedster Billy Hamilton as well as Cubs’ prospect Shawon Dunston, Jr. and other big league hopefuls.
Gold, red and printing plate versions of the autographed cards that are standard issue with virtually every card manufacturer’s product will be available for chasing but to add a spark to the product, tomorrow’s big league hopefuls will share the stage with Crash Davis, Annie Savoy and Nuke Laloosh.
Among the inserts will be the new Minor League Mascot Patches that will include gold and red parallels. Hat logo patches showing off logos from various minor league teams will get the same treatment.
Collectors will also have a chance to pull a redemption card for a complete, game-used item from a minor league game.
2013 Topps Pro Debut Minor League Materials inserts are game worn swatches that will also have lower print run color variations.
