Brooklyn Card Shop Destroyed By Fire

A popular sports card and comic book shop in Brooklyn was leveled and a firefighter injured after a blaze earlier this week.

Collectors Fantasy, a long-time shop located in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, is no more.

The shop and apartment units above it were destroyed by a fire that broke out late Tuesday morning. By the time firefighters arrived, the shop was engulfed, fed by the many paper products and cards inside. The fire reportedly started in the residential units, however.

A firefighter, 26 year-old Andrew Schierer, was checking the third floor when a brick wall collapsed. Schierer tumbled some 30 feet, sliding through debris to what had been the basement area and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to recover. Three other firefighers suffered minor injuries and some residents in the area were treated for smoke inhalation.

Collectors Fantasy had been in operation for 25 years according to its website. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
