Bonds Refusing Autographs Even in ’89

Signing autographs for sick kids was a job Barry Bonds hated as a young member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He was sure the 20 year-old intern was ripping him off.

Maybe it was a game.

When Kevin Guilfoile was given the task of rounding up autographs for the ill children the Pittsburgh Pirates hoped to cheer up, the college student had to deal with a young Barry Bonds. It was not a pleasant experience.

Now grown, and a novelist, Guilfoile recalls those days with disgust in a recent blog post, but isn’t gloating about the prospect of Bonds winding up in jail for lying to a grand jury.
