2013 Score Football Rookies Get ’89 Treatment; Product to Offer More Autos

2013 Score Football will be here in a little over two months and the 25^th edition of the often overlooked staple will include a makeover of sorts. Panini announced this week that the former low end product would become one with the hit-focused mainstream while still maintaining a large base set for traditional collectors.

Score made its debut in 1989 and immediately became the most highly regarded set of the year, featuring the rookie cards of Barry Sanders, Troy Aikman, Deion Sanders, Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Thurman Thomas followed by a "supplemental" set that wasn't always easy to find but didn't offer much in terms of star power. Each series was also sold at the factory set level, but at least so far, Panini hasn't decided to revisit that part of the brand's first year.

2013 Score Football will come in blaster boxes and rack packs at the retail level, but its hobby box configuration will include 50-card jumbo packs. Inside each box will be at least three hits including two autographed cards. In recent years, autographs in the Score brand have been sprinkled in cases with jumbo sized odds at a low price point.

Panini will dust off the 1989 Score debut design for a series of 110 rookie cards. There will be 50 of those per hobby box. The base set will offer a fair representation of the best players on every NFL teams with 440 cards planned including 220 veterans.

There will be three 32-card subsets and a 14-card ‘Road to the Super Bowl’ insert set that honors the Baltimore Ravens’ championship season.

2013 Score Football will also include three parallel sets and case hits that include 1/1 printing plates.

It will offer the first officially-licensed NFL cards for the upcoming season when it hits store shelves right around Memorial Day.
