Any football product released between the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft has a few obstacles to overtake. The first is that without any games going on, football does not seem (except here in the Dallas area) to be a major topic of conversation between mid-February and July. Of course, in Dallas, if you listen to local sports radio there seems to be no other story but who will be the Cowboys play-caller next season. However, those conversations also mean that less attention is paid to any specific player. With that background, any “new” product sometimes has to face a sports head wind and 2013 Topps Magic football is no real exception.
The product, which designed is based upon the old Topps Magic Football products was released in 24 packs boxes with eight cards per pack at the hobby box level. The boxes do promise that collectors will receive three autographs per box and historical and gridiron coins are very randomly inserted as well. My local card shop (Triple Cards in Plano, TX) is reporting decent but not overwhelming sales (less than three cases) at $76.95 and he did not think any major autograph hits had come out. Leading online retailers are currently at the $80-90 per box range.
Here’s what we pulled:
Base Cards: 130 of 220 with five duplicates or a little less than 60 percent of the set.
Short Prints: Fred Davis, Joe Haden, Mario Manningham, Colt McCoy, Randy Moss, B,J. Raji, Steven Ridley, Steve Young
Mini Parallels (1-220): Dwayne Allen, Drew Brees, Dwayne Bowe, Dez Bryant, Eric Decker, Dont’a Hightower, Dwight Jones, Dustin Keller, Eli Manning, Doug Martin, Clay Matthews, Dontani Poe, Darnelle Revis, Ed Reed, Devon Still
Mini Short-Print Parallels (221-275): I was surprised these were in the same ratio in our box as the regular sized SP cards. We received eight SP Parallel cards. Jon Baldwin, Kenny Britt, Nate Burleson, Michael Crabtree, Joe Flacco, Matt Flynn, Mario Manningham, Lance Moore
1948 Magic Style: Troy Aikman, Justin Blackmon
Charismatic Combos: Jay Cutler/Brandon Marshall, Matt Schaub/Andre Johnson
Magical Moments: Jared Allen, Marshawn Lynch, Eli Manning, LeSean McCoy
Rookie Enchantment: Justin Blackmon, Coby Fleener, Michael Floyd, Robert Turbin
Supernatural Stars: Peyton Manning, Ray Rice, Philip Rivers, Michael Turner, Mike Wallace, Patrick Willis
Autographs: Adrian Clayborn (Base Card SP): Malcolm Floyd, Marvin Jones
No overwhelming hits but a nice assortment of cards with hits bigger and smaller. Nice design and nice delivery means the 2013 football off-season begins well for card collectors.
