A T204 Ramly Walter Johnson baseball card graded PSA 4 was auctioned on eBay Thursday night with a final selling price of over $14,000.
Modern collectors know how difficult it is to find a set like the 1971 Topps in high grade. Colored borders tend to show chipping. Imagine attempting to locate high grade singles of a set like the 1909 Ramly Cigarettes issue. The few that remain are often lower grade because of their gold borders and thin stock.
Even mid-grade examples are sought after by pre-War collectors especially those featuring popular Hall of Famers. A Walter Johnson from the T204 issue sold on eBay Thursday night for $14,204. The card was graded PSA 4 and drew 23 bids for the Indiana-based seller. A PSA 5 Ramly Johnson sold in a Mastro auction in December for $23,115 while an SGC 60 went for over $43,000 in December of 2005.
