1909 American Caramel Set Sells for $149,000

Mile High Card Company's auction went into the early hours of Friday morning with a major pre-War set and a group of Babe Ruth cards grabbing much of the attention.

A 1909 American Caramel (E 90-1) baseball card set missing only Joe Jackson, brought a winning bid of $126, 904 in the auction. With a 17.5% buyer's premium tacked on, final tally for the recipient was $149,112. The group had been completely graded. The near set was offered both individually and as one lot, but sold as a group when the combined individual card bids failed to top the set bid.

An 1887 Gypsy Queen Roger Conner card, graded SGC 60, brought $46,596 including the buyer's premium while a quntet of Babe Ruth cards brought a combined total of over $110,000, led by a 1915 Sporting News Babe Ruth graded GAI 5 ($34,719 with BP).

Two 1950s Bowman graded sets sold. A totally-graded PSA 8/9 set went for $36,811 while a 1955 graded set brought $32,662. Among modern era cards, a 1973 PSA 8/9 graded set went for $17,179.
